Hyde County Health Department provides dental fluoridation for children with Medicaid through the age of 3 ½ years of age.  This is a simple process in which fluoride varnish is painted on the child’s teeth after a visual inspection, cleaning, and drying of the teeth.  This varnish provides a protective coating. Hyde County Public Health Nurses are trained in fluoride application.

There are other means of obtaining fluoride, such as using fluoridated dietary supplement tablets, drops, or lozenges and fluoridated toothpaste.  Hyde County community drinking water also provides fluoride.

Hyde County Health Department has partnered with East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine for the provision of dental services for adults living in Hyde County, age 18 and over. ECU dental students and residents are involved in the planning and implementation of dental care.  The dental clinic is set up at the Swan Quarter Post Office.  To get an appointment or for more information, call the Health Department at 252-926-4399.
