Naloxone Distribution
The Hyde County Health Department provides free naloxone and training to community members and partners.
Naloxone nasal spray is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency. It is used to revive someone during an overdose from many prescription pain medications or street drugs such as heroin. It works by competing with opioids to bind with the same receptors in the brain.
Anyone can experience an opioid emergency at any time so it is helpful to be able to recognize the common signs.
These signs include:
Not waking up or not responding to voice or touch
Slow, irregular breathing or not breathing
Cold and clammy skin
The very small center of the eyes, or "pinpoint pupils"
Blue nails or lips

If these symptoms are present, a person may be experiencing an opioid emergency and naloxone can be administered no matter their age. Medical attention should be sought. If a person was not experiencing an overdose there are no negative side effects of naloxone. If a person was, however, they may experience confusion, shaking, sweating, nausea, or feelings of irritability or anger when waking up.
